MGOL and Technology

MGOL’s Technology statement:

Technology handled with careful consideration, in moderation; in ways that fit in with the program’s intent and don’t overwhelm, that enhance but don’t replace, and that encourage parent/child interaction is appropriate for use in a Mother Goose on the Loose program.

 The reasoning behind the statement:

Many librarians have been uncomfortable with the idea of incorporating new technology and media into their children’s programs. Some parents embrace new media; others make it a point to keep their children away from it. Some parents who attend library programs love the addition of new media into children’s programs; other abhor it.

As the creator of Mother Goose on the Loose, I present trainings to librarians throughout the United States, and within the past few years I have heard growing examples of successful media use in Mother Goose on the Loose. With strongly held opinions on both sides and no formal published position in the public library world regarding media use for young children, I decided to identify the issues and create a statement for Mother Goose on the Loose.
